I got this view from my one-man outrigger canoe off the shores of Waikiki Beach.

The hotel was built in 1927 at around $4 million and was completed in 18 months. The six-story, 400-room structure was fashioned in a Spanish-Moorish style popular during that period and influenced by Rudolph Valentino. Later construction brought the total to 528 rooms.

Long before Waikiki was developed in a tourist destination, it was a favorite residence and recreational center for Hawaiian royalty. King Kamehameha the Great 's home was where the hotel now stands, and Queen Consort Kaahumanu's summer palace was located on what is now the hotel's Coconut Grove.
